The past year has been a whirlwind of emotions and challenges for many of us. While I initially planned to begin this season with a discussion about letting go of the past year to move forward in your hairstyling business, today’s focus feels more urgent. This post is about finding calm in moments of overwhelming stress, inspired by recent events and a framework that has been a game-changer for me.
We live in a world where change often happens overnight, and situations arise that are beyond our control. Back during the pandemic, my husband and I felt this firsthand. We were overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate the uncertainty, so we created a framework to help us choose love over fear. Today, I want to share it with you so that when you find yourself in a stressful situation, you have tools to regain calm and clarity.
Ask yourself: "Am I or my family members in any immediate danger?" If the answer is yes, focus on ensuring safety. This is your priority. If no, move to the next step.
Consider if friends or family outside your household are in immediate danger. If yes, reach out to them. A simple message like, "Are you okay? Is there anything I can support you with?" can go a long way. Once you’ve reached out, let go of the need for an immediate response. Trust they will reply when they can, and avoid spiraling into frantic worry.
If you’re not directly impacted, shift your focus to where you are needed. Engage in activities that bring you joy or contribute positively. For hairstylists, this might mean organizing your tools, planning creative content, or brainstorming ways to serve your clients better. These small actions can redirect your energy productively.
Set a timer for 5–10 minutes to consume news or social media updates related to the overwhelming situation. This allows you to stay informed without becoming consumed. Once the timer ends, consciously shift your focus.
Physical movement can help release pent-up energy. Go for a walk, jump on a trampoline, or do some yoga. Nature is particularly healing—take time to step outside if possible.
Writing down your feelings can provide clarity and relief. Use journaling as a tool to process emotions and shift into a more grounded state.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk it out with someone you trust. If that’s not an option, engage in activities that bring comfort, like spending time with pets or enjoying a hobby.
Remember that social media platforms and news outlets thrive on capturing your attention. Limit your exposure to content that triggers fear or anxiety. By protecting your mental space, you’ll be better equipped to support others and show up in your business and personal life.
When overwhelming situations arise, it’s easy to feel stuck or powerless. By following this framework, you can find moments of calm and clarity to navigate challenges with grace. Whether it’s reaching out to help others, shifting your energy, or simply taking a moment for yourself, every step counts.
Sending you love and support as you navigate whatever challenges come your way. Remember, taking care of your well-being is essential—not just for you, but for those who depend on you in your hairstyling business and beyond.
