Hi, my name is Ann-Marie Christell. I'm a coach for hairstylist that wants to grow their business behind the chair without feeling overwhelmed or working longer hours beyond care. I have over 20 years of experience working behind the chair, earning over six figures if you wish to make more money without working longer hours bearing the chair, and bringing spiritual and sustainable principles into your business and life when you are in the right place. In this podcast, I will mix business strategies, marketing tips, personal development, spiritual practices, and sustainable ways of living and working. Welcome to the sustainable hairstylist podcast. Welcome back to the podcast. I'm super excited to be here. And I'm so looking forward to share this information with you today. Because I am very, very passionate about building a personal brand. As a hairstylist. This is something that I love talking about because it gives you a different perspective. It gives you another type of perspective that will make you stand out by just being you. So I know, as a hairstylist, we do so many things in our businesses, when you started his hair school, you probably thought that you were only going to do hair. No one maybe even discussed the fact that we need to clean our space, we need to do our bookkeeping, we need to do our own marketing, we need to do hair, we have to be our own social media manager, we have to our website, and yada yada, yada, yada. Now, I think more than ever, because everything is going so fast paced right now. And it's super easy to become overwhelmed, it's super easy to look at what other hairstylists are doing. It's super easy to think that I have to do all of these million things, I have to be on all these platforms, I have to do all of this stuff. At the end of the day, maybe you do not have a foundation to a strategy that is actually working. My gift to you in this episode is for you to have an understanding of what it means to build a personal brand. And why you should do this and why you should have that as a foundation in one of the building blocks in your business in your marketing strategy. And why I'm saying this is because this will eliminate all the people that are not aligned with you, you will start to attract more of the people that you actually want to have in your business, you will see your shift. First of all, you need to understand who it is that you're attracting into your world. And then you will see massive things happening. If you're consistent with this, you will start to notice that there are certain type of people that really like who you are, what you are about. And they will travel a long time to get to you. I've had people fly all over the world. Like I've had people fly from Australia to Sweden to get their hair done. I've had people fly from Canada, to Sweden to get their hair done. From America, to Sweden, all over Europe to Sweden to get their hair done. Because they have connected with me. They like what I'm about. They like my values. They feel trust with the things that I do. And they are willing to fly halfway across the globe for that. And I want that as well for you. We have to remember that the clients that come and get their hair done, maybe they just don't live in 10 minutes walk from your salon, the more you start to show who you are, that will broaden and more of the people that really really like your values like the way you're being like your tone will come and all those people that may be get offended about the things that you're saying will just go away. So this is the thing I want you to if you have some paper pen, make some notes because this is going to be so so valuable for you So one of the things that I see, a lot of hair stylists are doing is that on the social media, they're just posting images of the work that you're doing. And that's it. And by just posting images of the work or videos, or real sort of whatever you're into, of your work, you're not really building a connection with someone. So one of the key points that we are doing on social media, you're me main job on social media should be to build the connection between you and the person that follows you. It's all about having them to get to know you have a taste of what is it that you are about. And when I'm talking about that, I'm talking about, I'm talking about who you are, how you are showing up in the salon, what energy you're holding for your client that is sitting in your chair, the transformations that are happening in the chair, that you are there, the conversations you're having with your clients, who you are being and how you make your clients feel when they're sitting in your chair, that is what I want you to start to share on social media. I'm not telling you to share your whole life, the number of first thing that I want you to start to think of is, what are all those things that are off limits? Maybe you have kids, maybe you don't want to have images of them on the internet, that's fine. You can share that you have kids in other ways than actually showing their face. We also have to think of that if you were to be as big as Britney Spears, what would you be okay with the people know about you? So, if you were super, super famous and had a million followers, what would you keep safe? Totally off limits? And what would you be okay with that people know about you, this is your first assignment, because we need to understand that we have to be safe with our marketing and things strategy. You have to feel safe in what it is that you're sharing what you're doing, and so on. And we we we don't want to all of a sudden, one day feel creeped out because someone know something about you. And some people are weird. Some people find out stuff about you and some people will Lurker around and around until they get to know you very, very deeply with the stuff that is being said and shared. So knowing what not to share, what is the secret? Is what your first step here, going back to really knowing what is your uniqueness, you probably have had different experience where you shared stories with your clients when they're sitting in the chair that they have really connected with. With you. I want you to take a moment to actually start to think of what are those stories that people have connected with? Is there a way that you can start to share these stories on social media in a way that you feel safe, because people will connect with your stories, people will connect with the things that you actually share about yourself a little bit about the things that you like to do outside of your work. What is important when it comes to maybe you are like me that wants to work in a more sustainable way. Why is that? What is your personal story about behind that? Maybe you love some of the brands that you're selling in the salon because they have an amazing backstory? What is your personal connection to all of this? Why did you start to do hair? What is your connection to that? What is your biggest lessons working with hair? What is the biggest lessons around creating a type of service that
is your speciality? What are the things that you can share about that actually will make people start to care about you. The worst thing you can do on social media is post an image and then write out the recipe of the hair colour that you have actually created for your client. If you want to become colour expert for that particular brand, okay, amazing, if you want to attract the latter hairstylist that will follow you. Yes, that is amazing. But if you want to have more people into your salon that you're doing hair for, it's more about building that connection, and actually sharing stuff that makes people care about your work. So your job on social media is to start to build the connection with people start to build out that something that people want to connect with. Because so here is why we want to do this and why it is so important is if someone feels that they already know you, when they booked their appointment, they will look forward to see you, the whole experience will become so like, off the charts, that they are really, really looking forward to this. So even when they say hi at the door, they might want to start to share something with you. And that has happened to me. So I'm talking of from my own experience that this is actually working, and people are looking forward to share, like, Hey, I went to that restaurant that you were writing on social media, and it was amazing, thank you for the taper and so on. I'm not saying to share everything from your personal life, but just small trips, why we want this is because if they all already, like you, they already trust you, they already are 100% convinced that you can create their dream hair, then the communication between you and the client will become so automatic, so easy. Because one of the things that we really have to be on point with is to understand what it is that our client wants to have done with their hair. And you know, as much as I am that sometimes some clients are not really good at communicating, what is it that they want to have done with their hair. So if they like you trust you, then the communication will become so easy, because they will wait, they are looking forward to actually start to have this conversation with you. And they will be more comfortable in your space. So they will be more relaxed. Which means that it's more likely that they are happy with the service that you provide. And in this way, it will become so so much easier to actually create an amazing service for them to create an amazing experience that they will start to talk about with everyone they know. And they will come back and they will come back. Because the deep connection that you have created, they have already started to feel the feeling of the experience, even before they have come and sat in your chair. They started to feel that experience when they started to stalk you on social media. And when I'm saying stalk you I mean it in in a positive way. But they have started to feel this experience already done. And the more we can actually bring that on social media, bring that on our website, bring that everywhere that we are present outside our salon. That is actually meaning that's the whole meaning of building a personal brand is to get our customers to actually get to know us get a feeling of who we are. Get that like excitement and get that trust and like factor. If we do this, our businesses will change. And it doesn't matter if you decide to move salons. It doesn't matter if you maybe stop working on weekends or whatever it is your clients We'll come to you, no matter what the connection that you have with your clients how you make your clients feel, is the one thing that no one can compete with you about, we have to remember who you are how you show up how you make your clients feel, how you're creating amazing transformations, that is your uniqueness. The more you can hone in on that, the more you can share about that, the more your personal brand will become stronger. And the more the people that are aligned with who you are, and what you do, and what your values are, the more that those people are going to start to show up in your chair. And it's interesting, because in one of my electrician courses, already, like five years ago, I taught my students how to build their dream client avatar. And it is interesting that some of them, even their first hair model was actually the person that they have written up in detail. And the experience they had was the same experience that they wanted to have with someone. So we need to understand who it is that we're attracting. Because if we know who we're attracting, then we actually know what kind of stories that we want to share in order for them to react. So now you have gotten an understanding of why I think that building your own personal brand, as a hairstylist, is one of the fundamental pieces, building blocks in your business and in your marketing strategy. Because you will be able to charge more money, it will be easier for you to work when you're doing hair when people really enjoy who you are. Because those clients are not that draining, and you will enjoy those clients even more. So the days will flow faster, you will get easier to build a connection with your clients. And it's easier to make your clients happier. And leave the salon and leave an amazing review going out telling to the world that you're doing an amazing job and they are talking about how they are feeling when they are with you. And remember, as hairstylists you have a chance to really, and I when I talk about this, I say that we are drawing the beauty that are inside our clients out into the outside. Creating hair for people can really transform them from the inside and out. And if your clients have built up that connection with you already before they have set foot in your salon, it will become so much easier to do this. I want you to start to think of what is the unique, unique experience that you have with your clients? How is it that you make them feel? I can encourage you to actually, if you have your five favourite clients that you know that you trust, maybe you can ask them a few questions like what was your experience? How did I make you feel? What is it that makes you come back over time? And start to interrogate a little bit more? And ask how, what they think that you should start to share more of who you are and start to show up on social media. They're to speak into camera. They're to do a live stream, they're to show how to style the hair in a certain way.
Your clients want to see this from you. Even if there is a million other hairstylists that have done this. You have your unique perspective on this. So start to share this with your followers and start to share your uniqueness. Start to talk. I trust you, your business will transform. If you start to do this. Now you understand why you shouldn't build your own personal brand. As a hairstylist. I can go on and on on going on, for hours on this topic because I find it so interesting.
